EDC Mexico 2019

By Carlin Nguyen on February 26th, 2019 | Music

Our first outing of an international EDM festival outside of the US. No better choice than to head south of the border to the city capital of Mexico. The sixth outing of EDC Mexico was something out of a yearbook. It is amazing how close Mexico City is from the city of Los Angeles with a simple non-stop flight. Literally a tie between driving to Las Vegas or flying to Mexico City.

A chance worth to partake. Many of us at LAD have visited Mexico, in general. But nothing like this. Though avid concertgoers we all are..there was always something different in Mexico City this time around. Unlike in Las Vegas where traveling time is miles away from the city, in Mexico City, the distance is generally closer. However, as a supercity Mexico City is – the time is comparable as the city population is amongst the top five in the world.

Any research done prior to arrival is pivotal including getting there and exiting. As foreigners to a different country, the worse thing can be a lost phone connection or running out of batteries on ones cellular phone. And it’s not being kidnapped or getting murdered. That hysteria is too much depicted in fictional movies.

Upon arriving to the city, the general rush-hour traffic kicks in. And the time ticks away for us to arrive on-site and receive our passes. A surprisingly and easy Uber ride within a half-hour makes things easier from the airport. And that is normal for going somewhere that’s about several miles away. Reminscent of LA traffic part deux.

The setup at EDC Mexico is very spreadwide as their total setup consists of about nine stages. A very humongous venue – almost rival to the venue in Las Vegas. Starting with their three art cars – Mayan Warrior, Wide Awake, and Boombox – these are stationed around the venue, each offering a different flavor of dance music. And we transition to their stereoBLOOM stage – this stage offers the latest of sounds from Insomniac Records’ current roster known for their eclastic trance.  The Dos Equis stage offers local and international flavor of music – a slight variation from the typical electronic music. And rounding out the rest of the originals – wasteLAND, neonGARDEN, circuitGROUNDS, and kineticFIELD.

An almost ten years after the last EDC show in Los Angeles, a lot of good memories can be made in Mexico City. An almost reborn of EDC from the late 2000s. The overall capacity nearly over 100,000 people. Almost comparable to EDC when it was in Los Angeles. At EDC Mexico – one can get lost in the euphoria of music whether if it’s melodic, hard, soft, or music with pyrotechnics. Unlike at EDC Las Vegas where the entire party is within its oval shape, at EDC Mexico – there’s mystery to it and the environment and vegetation adds to its overall experience.  But there’s one constant – it’s a community as a whole no matter where one person is from. That’s what it makes it unique. And EDC knows all about it.
